Unique Scientist: Manasi Pethe

Time to meet Manasi Pethe (She/her)! Manasi is a protein engineer and a science artist originally from India but currently living in the USA!

What kind of scientist are you?
I am a protein engineer. I currently work in the agribiotech sector and previously worked in enzyme design and vaccine design. I have always struggled to find a common ground between art and science since I’m interested in both. So now, I draw science based comics! Tadaaaa

I’m also involved in a group called @thestemtimes. Wonderful way to do science outreach!

What made you want to become a scientist?
I love color 🙂 science involves a lot of color.

What makes you a #UniqueScientist?
I am a science artist. A right brained scientist 😉

What’s something cool you do outside of work?
Love long walks, traveling and collecting / making one of a kind art pieces

If you had one wish and could change anything in science, what would it be?
The perception of how science is done. Most manuscripts make us feel like they went from start to finish in one fell swoop. It would’ve been nice to read what really happened.

“My mom inspires me daily, always pushing me to do what I am interested in.”

Who has inspired you the most in your journey to where you are now?
My mom inspires me daily, always pushing me to do what I am interested in – without worrying if I’m good at it. Just create.

I have been fortunate to be a part of science communities like @stempeers @thestemtimes that foster young talent and also provide career support! Thank you to each and everyone of you!

Let’s end on a high note! What’s something you’ve done this week that you’re proud of?
I’m a new plant parent. I kept my 8-9 house plants alive!
