Time to meet Kathirvel Alagesan (He/him)! Kathirvel is a biochemist originally from India and currently working at Institute for Glycomics, Griffith University in Australia!

What kind of scientist are you?
I am biochemist interested in glycans. I use mass spectrometry to sequence glycoproteins to identify disease biomarker.

What made you want to become a scientist?
To inspire others – I have always been passionate about teaching and continuous learning. Curiosity and inner fire.

I come from the section of the society that has been impressed socially and economically. Openly gay scientist from India – proud and happy 🙂

What’s something cool you do outside of work?
Lately I have picked up my camera again. Painting is something that is always fall back to unwind myself. Other than that I took pole dancing classes – loved it.

If you had one wish and could change anything in science, what would it be?
Make science more accessible. Showcase diverse superheroes in science not just their success stories but also their struggles!

Who has inspired you the most in your journey to where you are now?
Prof. Sadasivam – He was my thesis advisor during my Bachelor degree. He was the first to notice the potential in me. He groomed me at that early stage on how to be an independent researcher but also be inclusive.

Let’s end on a high note! What’s something you’ve done this week that you’re proud of?
I submitted my entry for unique scientist. Finally finished my first draft for the scicomm blog I am planning to launch in upcoming days. Breaking down complex science concept in 3 min.
