Unique Scientist: Dr. Gaius Augustus

Time to meet Dr. Gaius Augustus ( he/him/his or they/them/their )! Dr. Gaius Augustus is an artist and multimedia science communicator with a research background in cancer biology!

What kind of scientist are you?
I received my BSc in Integrative Studies (with a focus on Chemistry and Biology) and my PhD in Cancer Biology. My studies surrounded integrating biological fields including evolutionary development, population genetics, epidemiology, statistics, and bioinformatics. I’m also an artist, and believe in using visual and interactive communication techniques to share science with others.

What made you want to become a scientist?
There’s something magical about learning something new that no one has ever known before.

What makes you a #UniqueScientist?
I’m a radical queer trans* person, born female, transitioned to male, now sit somewhere in between. I was raised Jewish in the Bible Belt of the US, though now consider myself pagan. My fine arts high school had a huge focus on cultural and ethnic diversity, gifting me with an incredibly unique experience that makes me who I am. At my core, I’m a storyteller, and I credit much of my success as a scientist to my creative talents.

What’s something cool you do outside of work?
Outside of work, I do all sorts of artsy stuff. I create comics, illustrations, and animations. I design jewelry and clothing. I make video games. I write fiction. I love going to anime, furry, and comic book conventions, and I read way too many webcomics.

If you had one wish and could change anything in science, what would it be?
If I could change any one thing in science with one wish, I’d have to ask for more wishes! There’s so many problematic things going on in science right now. I don’t want to start over, but can we start over?

Who has inspired you the most in your journey to where you are now?
My biggest inspiration is my partner, who’s been with me since high school. We share a unique journey, and they’ve always been there to push me forward (and pull me back) when I needed it.

Let’s end on a high note! What’s something you’ve done this week that you’re proud of?
This week, I got a huge amount of work done on an upcoming animation project!
