Unique Scientist: Tara Kane

Time to meet Tara Kane (They/them/theirs)! Tara is a neuroscientist originally from the United Kingdom interested in circadian rhythms currently at Harvard Medical School in the USA!

What kind of scientist are you?
I’m a neuroscientist! I study behaviour and how fruit flies’ brains tell time and switch from day to night. Our lab studies sleep in general but I focus on circadian rhythms.

What made you want to become a scientist?
I’ve always loved science and learning – I wanted to be in school forever. Research is my way of cheating the system 😉 I get to ask the questions I want to – even ones that haven’t been asked before!

What makes you a #UniqueScientist?
I’m queer – pansexual and nonbinary. I have tattoos and piercings and use they/them pronouns but I’m still here!

What’s something cool you do outside of work?
I love to sing and write music, I used to be in an a cappella group!

If you had one wish and could change anything in science, what would it be?
I wish there was more trans representation.

Who has inspired you the most in your journey to where you are now?
Ben Barres – a trans neuroscientist at Stanford 🙂

Let’s end on a high note! What’s something you’ve done this week that you’re proud of?
I went to pride!! So much fun – so much love.
